Padma Purana — Bhumi Khanda, Shloka 27

Dialogue of Gobhila and Padmāvatī: Daitya Obstruction vs. the Power of Pativratā Dharma

patyurlokaṃ prayāṃtyete prasādātsvāminastadā | agniṃ naiva tyajedvipro brahmalokaṃ prayāti saḥ

FAQs

It indicates a posthumous realm or state attained in accordance with marital dharma—here framed as the wife’s attainment of her husband’s destined sphere through the lord’s grace.

The sacred household fire represents continuity of Vedic duty (e.g., agnihotra and daily rites). The verse links steadfast ritual responsibility with the merit leading to Brahmaloka.

It teaches fidelity to one’s dharma: marital devotion is associated with a shared spiritual destination, while a brāhmaṇa’s disciplined upkeep of sacred obligations is presented as a direct path to an exalted realm.
