Yama-vilāpana
The Lamentation Concerning Yama
माधवावसथैनैव समस्तेन पितामह । स्वकर्मस्था विकर्मस्थाः शुचयोऽशुचयोऽपि वा ॥ ३ ॥
mādhavāvasathainaiva samastena pitāmaha | svakarmasthā vikarmasthāḥ śucayo'śucayo'pi vā || 3 ||
Narada (addressing Pitamaha/Brahma in a laudatory assertion within the tirtha-mahatmya frame)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: karuna
It declares the extraordinary purifying power of Mādhava’s sacred abode: mere residence (association with Viṣṇu’s kṣetra) is presented as a direct means of upliftment, transcending ordinary distinctions of purity and impurity.
The verse emphasizes Viṣṇu-centered grace: closeness to Mādhava (through dwelling in His abode/holy place) purifies even those burdened by vikarma, showing bhakti and sambandha (connection) as transformative.
It implicitly applies Dharma-śāstra logic (often taught alongside Kalpa/Vedāṅga practice): the contrast of svakarma vs. vikarma frames conduct, while the tirtha-mahātmyā principle functions like a prāyaścitta (expiatory) teaching centered on sacred geography.
