Adhyaya 90 — The Slaying of Shumbha and the Reabsorption of the Goddesses into Ambika
तस्यापतत एवाशु खड्गं चिच्छेद चण्डिका ।
धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैर्बाणैश्चर्म चार्ककरामलम् ॥
tasyāpatata evāśu khaḍgaṃ ciccheda caṇḍikā / dhanurmuktaiḥ śitair bāṇaiś carma cārkakarāmalam
तो धावताच चण्डिकेने तत्क्षणी त्याची तलवार छेदली; आणि धनुषातून सोडलेल्या तीक्ष्ण बाणांनी सूर्यकिरणांसारखी तेजस्वी त्याची ढालही भेदली।
Divine action is both compassionate and precise: it disarms aggression (sword) and nullifies defenses (shield) that protect wrongdoing.

The sword can symbolize violent intent; the shield symbolizes rationalizations and self-protection of ego. Devī’s arrows (focused awareness) penetrate both.
