Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve
Gandharva Encounter
nānāpraharaṇaṁ ghoraṁ adṛśyata mahad balam | tad vai ghoraṁ asaṅkhyeyaṁ garjacca vividhā giraḥ ||
The verse underscores the overwhelming, dehumanizing scale of armed conflict: when force becomes innumerable and weapon-laden, it naturally produces terror and suffering, reminding the listener that adharma often manifests as uncontrolled violence and intimidation.
Mārkaṇḍeya describes the sudden sight of a huge, fearsome army equipped with many weapons, accompanied by loud, varied roars and cries—an image that heightens tension and foreshadows imminent confrontation.
