Educational Q&A

The verse teaches a Sāṅkhya-style causation: the five great elements (earth, air, ether, water, fire/light) are products of ahaṅkāra. Ethically, this supports viveka (discernment) and vairāgya (detachment): since the material constituents are derived and not the Self, one should not cling to them as ultimate.

Vaiśampāyana continues an instructional discourse in Śānti Parva, presenting a doctrinal enumeration of cosmic principles. The focus is explanatory rather than dramatic: it situates the physical world within a chain of origins to guide the listener toward right understanding.
