धर्मस्य बहुद्वारत्वम् — Nārada’s Audience with Indra (Śānti-parva 340)

(भीष्म उवाच नारदस्त्वथ पप्रच्छ भगवन्तं जनार्दनम्‌ | केषु केषु च भावेषु त्वं द्रष्टव्यो महाप्रभो ।।

bhīṣma uvāca

nāradas tv atha papraccha bhagavantaṃ janārdanam |

keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu tvaṃ draṣṭavyo mahāprabho ||

śrībhagavān uvāca

śṛṇu nārada tattvena prādurbhāvān mahāmune |

matsyaḥ kūrmo varāhaś ca narasiṃhaś ca vāmanaḥ |

rāmo rāmaś ca rāmaś ca kṛṣṇaḥ kalkī ca te daśa |

pūrvaṃ mīno bhaviṣyāmi sthāpayiṣyāmy ahaṃ prajāḥ |

lokān vedān dhariṣyāmi majjamānān mahārṇave |

dvitīyaṃ kūrmarūpaṃ me hemakūṭanibhaṃ suta |

mandaraṃ dhārayiṣyāmi amṛtārthe dvijottama |

magnaṃ mahārṇave ghore bhārākrāntām imaṃ punaḥ |

sattvair ākrāntasarvāṅgāṃ naṣṭāṃ sāgaramekhalām |

ānayiṣyāmi svasthānaṃ vārāhaṃ rūpam āsthitaḥ |

भीष्म म्हणाले—त्यानंतर नारदांनी भगवान् जनार्दनांना विचारले—“महाप्रभो! कोणकोणत्या भावांत व रूपांत आपले दर्शन व स्मरण करावे?” श्रीभगवान म्हणाले—“महामुनी नारद! तत्त्वतः माझे प्रादुर्भाव ऐक—मत्स्य, कूर्म, वराह, नरसिंह, वामन; परशुराम, रघुकुलश्रेष्ठ श्रीराम, बलराम, श्रीकृष्ण आणि कल्की—हे माझे दहा अवतार आहेत. प्रथम मी मत्स्यरूप धारण करीन व प्रजांना सुरक्षित करीन; महासागरात बुडत असलेले लोक आणि वेद मी धारण करीन. दुसरा माझा कूर्मावतार असेल, हेमकूटासारखा; अमृतासाठी देव जेव्हा क्षीरसागराचे मंथन करतील, तेव्हा मी मंदराचल पर्वत पाठीवर धारण करीन. पुन्हा जेव्हा ही पृथ्वी भयंकर महासागरात बुडेल—भाराने दडपली जाईल, सर्वांगाने सत्त्वांनी आक्रांत होईल, समुद्र-वलयात लुप्त होईल—तेव्हा वराहरूप धारण करून मी तिला तिच्या स्थानावर परत आणीन.”
