Saṃhāra-krama (The Sequence of Cosmic Dissolution) — Yājñavalkya’s Discourse
अनीथ्चवर:ः कथं मुच्येदित्येवं शत्रुकर्शन । वदन्ति कारणै: श्रैष्ठ्यं योगा: सम्पड्मनीषिण:
Bhīṣma uvāca: anīśvarāḥ kathaṁ mucyed ity evaṁ śatrukarśana | vadanti kāraṇaiḥ śraiṣṭhyaṁ yogāḥ sampad-manīṣiṇaḥ ||
भीष्म म्हणाले—शत्रुकर्शन! योगाचे मनीषी विद्वान् आपल्या मताची श्रेष्ठता सांगताना असा युक्तिवाद करतात—‘ईश्वर न मानणारा मनुष्य मुक्त कसा होईल?’ म्हणून मोक्षासाठी ईश्वराची सत्ता मान्य करणे आवश्यक आहे, असे ते प्रतिपादन करतात.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse presents a theistic argument: liberation (moksha) is not possible for one who rejects Īśvara; learned proponents of yoga claim their view is superior because it acknowledges a Lord as essential to release.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction to the king, Bhīṣma reports the reasoning used by certain yogic thinkers: they challenge non-theistic positions by asking how liberation could occur without accepting the existence of a supreme Lord.
