Dama-pradhāna-dharma (Self-restraint as the Root of Dharma) — Śānti-parva 154
na punarjīvitaḥ kaścit kāladharmam upāgataḥ | priyo vā yadi vā dveṣyaḥ prāṇināṃ gatir īdṛśī ||

Death is the universal law of Time: no one who has reached it returns to life. Therefore one should cultivate equanimity and live by dharma rather than being driven by attachment to the dear or hatred toward the disliked.
In the Shanti Parva, Bhishma instructs Yudhishthira on dharma and right understanding after the war. Here he emphasizes the inevitability of death for all beings, framing it as a moral and philosophical reminder meant to steady the mind amid grief and judgment.
