सर्वात्मनैव धर्मस्य न परस्य न चात्मन: । सर्वोपायैरुज्जिहीर्षेदात्मानमिति निश्चय:
sarvātmanāiva dharmasya na parasya na cātmanaḥ | sarvopāyair ujjihīrṣed ātmānam iti niścayaḥ ||
भीष्म म्हणाले—संकटकाळी मनुष्याने ना परधर्माकडे पाहावे, ना केवळ आपल्या रूढ स्वधर्मालाच धरून बसावे. सर्वस्वाने, सर्व उपायांनी, स्वतःचा उद्धार करावा—हा ठाम निर्णय आहे।
