Śalya-parva Adhyāya 26 — Duryodhana’s remnant formation and rapid engagements
hatabhūyiṣṭhayodhā tu tava senā viśāmpate | kiñciccheṣā mahārāja kṛpaṇaṃ samapadyata ||
The verse highlights the inevitable human and moral aftermath of large-scale violence: when most warriors are slain, the surviving force becomes powerless and miserable, reminding a ruler that war’s ‘victory’ often culminates in ruin and grief.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Kaurava host has been largely annihilated; only a small remnant remains, and the army has sunk into a pitiable state.
