Go-mahātmyam: Pavitrāṇāṃ Pavitraṃ
Cows and Ghee as Supreme Purifiers
जरारोगोपसम्पन्नां जीर्णा वापीमिवाजलाम् | दत्त्वा तम: प्रविशति द्विजं क्लेशेन योजयेत्
jarārogopasampannāṁ jīrṇā vāpīm ivājalām | dattvā tamaḥ praviśati dvijaṁ kleśena yojayet ||
भीष्म म्हणाले—जी गाय वार्धक्य व रोगांनी ग्रस्त, पाण्याविना पडलेल्या ओसाड विहिरीसारखी जीर्ण व निष्प्रयोजन झाली असेल, अशी गाय दान केल्याने दाता घोर अंधकारमय नरकात पडतो. असे दान ब्राह्मण ग्राहीताला केवळ व्यर्थ क्लेश देते. म्हणून दान योग्य व हितकारक असावे; निरुपयोगी व त्रासदायक वस्तूचे दान पुण्य नव्हे, पापाचे कारण ठरते.

Charity must be appropriate and beneficial. Donating something useless—like a cow ruined by age and disease—does not create merit; it harms the recipient and leads the giver toward demerit and a ‘dark’ fate.
In Bhīṣma’s instruction on dāna-dharma, he warns that giving a decrepit, diseased cow is ethically wrong because it imposes hardship on the brāhmaṇa recipient; such a ‘gift’ is condemned and said to lead to darkness/hell.
