Educational Q&A

The verse’s imagery of a radiant, sky-like vimāna functions as a poetic marker of exalted reward: dharmic merit is portrayed as leading to elevated, luminous states, reinforcing the ethical idea that righteous conduct bears transcendent fruit.

Bhīṣma is describing a celestial vehicle—vast as the sky and shining like the sun and a precious gem—typically as part of a larger account of someone’s ascent, honor, or reward resulting from virtue, vows, gifts, or disciplined conduct.
