Garuḍa’s Breach of the Amṛta-Guard and Boons with Viṣṇu; Encounter with Indra (Ādi-parva, Adhyāya 29)
bruvāṇam evaṃ garuḍaṃ brāhmaṇaḥ pratyabhāṣata | niṣādī mama bhāryeyaṃ nirgacchatu mayā saha ||
The verse highlights dharma as responsibility toward one’s spouse: the brāhmaṇa refuses to accept release or movement unless his wife is included, implying that ethical conduct requires safeguarding and not abandoning those bound to oneself by duty.
Garuḍa addresses the situation, and the brāhmaṇa responds by identifying the Niṣāda woman as his wife and insisting that she must depart with him; his departure is conditional upon her being allowed to go as well.
