The verse highlights the moral and practical futility of covert oppression: even when the Pāṇḍavas were powerless children without allies, unjust schemes failed. It implicitly warns that adharma-driven policy breeds repeated failure and escalating conflict.
Karna addresses the king, recalling earlier attempts to restrain or harm the Pāṇḍavas through secret measures. He argues that those efforts did not succeed even when the Pāṇḍavas were young and vulnerable, implying that such tactics are ineffective now.
