Educational Q&A

The verse points to an ethical pattern in the epic: arrogance and the desire to intimidate others (here, the ghoṣayātrā undertaken in a spirit of display and provocation) can rebound into disgrace. Dharma calls for measured response—neither gloating at an enemy’s fall nor acting from spite, but choosing conduct guided by righteousness and long-term consequences.

After some intervening events, the Pāṇḍavas return to Dvaitavana during their forest exile. In the same region, the Kauravas conduct a ghoṣayātrā, and Duryodhana (Suyodhana) is captured and bound by the Gandharvas, setting up a tense moment that tests how the Pāṇḍavas will respond to their rival’s misfortune.
