Diti’s Untimely Desire and the Birth-Cause of the Asura Line
Prelude to Hiranyākṣa–Varāha
अथापि काममेतं ते प्रजात्यै करवाण्यलम् । यथा मां नातिरोचन्ति मुहूर्तं प्रतिपालय ॥ २२ ॥
athāpi kāmam etaṁ te prajātyai karavāṇy alam yathā māṁ nātirocanti muhūrtaṁ pratipālaya
तरीही संततीसाठी मी तुझी ही इच्छा त्वरित पूर्ण करीन. पण लोक मला दोष देऊ नयेत म्हणून तू फक्त काही क्षण थांब।
The henpecked husband may not be able to repay his wife for all the benefits that he derives from her, but as for begetting children by fulfilling sexual desire, it is not at all difficult for any husband unless he is thoroughly impotent. This is a very easy task for a husband under normal conditions. In spite of Kaśyapa’s being very eager, he requested her to wait for a few seconds so that others might not reproach him. He explains his position as follows.
This verse shows that even when fulfilling a spouse’s wish for progeny, desire should be regulated by dharma—one should wait for the proper time and avoid conduct that leads to social and moral disapproval.
Kashyapa was willing to grant her request for conception, but he urged her to wait briefly so the act would not be considered improper and so he would not incur blame for violating proper conduct and timing.
Act on important desires responsibly—pause, choose appropriate timing, and consider ethical and social consequences rather than acting impulsively.
