Brahmā’s Secondary Creation, Kāla (Eternal Time), and the Taxonomy of Species
श्वा सृगालो वृको व्याघ्रो मार्जार: शशशल्लकौ । सिंह: कपिर्गज: कूर्मो गोधा च मकरादय: ॥ २४ ॥
śvā sṛgālo vṛko vyāghro mārjāraḥ śaśa-śallakau siṁhaḥ kapir gajaḥ kūrmo godhā ca makarādayaḥ
कुत्रा, कोल्हा, लांडगा, वाघ, कोल्हा/कोल्ही, मांजर, ससा, शल्लक, सिंह, माकड, हत्ती, कासव, मगर इत्यादी आणि गोधा—हे सर्व पञ्चनख (पाच नखांचे) आहेत।
In Canto 3, Chapter 10, Śukadeva describes stages of creation where various species manifest; this verse lists several land and aquatic animals as part of that unfolding.
He is summarizing the divisions of creation (sarga), showing how diverse life forms appear by the Lord’s arrangement within the cosmic manifestation.
They cultivate humility and reverence for all living beings by reminding us that every species is part of a purposeful divine order, encouraging non-cruelty and responsible living.
