श्रीराजोवाच देवासुरनृणां सर्गो नागानां मृगपक्षिणाम् । सामासिकस्त्वया प्रोक्तो यस्तु स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे ॥ १ ॥ तस्यैव व्यासमिच्छामि ज्ञातुं ते भगवन् यथा । अनुसर्गं यया शक्त्या ससर्ज भगवान् पर: ॥ २ ॥
śrī-rājovāca devāsura-nṛṇāṁ sargo nāgānāṁ mṛga-pakṣiṇām sāmāsikas tvayā prokto yas tu svāyambhuve ’ntare
श्रीराजा म्हणाला—स्वायम्भुव मन्वंतरात देव, असुर, मनुष्य, नाग, पशु व पक्षी यांची जी सृष्टी झाली, ती आपण संक्षेपाने सांगितली. आता, हे भगवन्, तिचेच सविस्तर वर्णन मला जाणून घ्यायचे आहे; तसेच परम भगवानांनी कोणत्या शक्तीने अनुसृष्टी (द्वितीय सृष्टी) निर्माण केली हेही जाणून घ्यायचे आहे।
