हे संक्षिप्त युद्धसूक्त दुंदुभीला (युद्धनगाऱ्याला) जिवंत, श्वासासारख्या प्राणशक्तीप्रमाणे अभिषिक्त करून प्रतिष्ठित करते. तिचा गडगडाट विश्वाला चेतवतो आणि दूरवरूनच शत्रुत्वपूर्ण शक्तींना घबरवतो. इंद्राशी संलग्न होऊन हा नगारा अपोत्प्रायिक शस्त्र बनतो: तो दुरित (अपशकुन/अनिष्ट) दूर लोटतो, स्वपक्षीय सैन्याला एकत्र आणून उत्साहित करतो आणि रथयोध्यांसाठी विजय निश्चित करून सील करतो.
Mantra 1
दुन्दुभिः। उप॑ श्वासय पृथि॒वीमु॒त द्यां पु॑रु॒त्रा ते॑ वन्वतां॒ विष्ठि॑तं जग॑त्। स दु॑न्दुभे स॒जूरिन्द्रे॑ण दे॒वैर्दू॒राद् दवी॑यो॒ अप॑ सेध॒ शत्रू॑न्
(दुन्दुभि:) हे दुन्दुभे! पृथ्वी आणि द्यौ यांना श्वास दे, प्राणवान कर; तुझ्यासाठी दूरदूरपर्यंत स्थिर झालेले जग सर्वत्र हालचाल करो. हे दुन्दुभे! इंद्र व देवांसह संयुक्त होऊन, दूरून—आणखी दूरून—शत्रूंना परतव, दूर लोट आणि रोख.

आ क्र॑न्दय॒ बल॒मोजो॑ न॒ आ धा॑ अ॒भि ष्ट॑न दुरि॒ता बाध॑मानः । अप॑ सेध दुन्दुभे दु॒च्छुना॑मि॒त इन्द्र॑स्य मु॒ष्टिर॑सि वी॒डय॑स्व
गर्जून उठ; आमच्यासाठी बल व ओज धारण कर. दुरितांवर गर्जना कर, त्यांना बाधून दूर हाकल. हे दुन्दुभी (नगारा), दुच्छुना (अशुभ-अपशकुन) दूर रोख; तू खरोखरच इंद्राची मुठ आहेस—आपले सामर्थ्य प्रकट कर.

प्रामूं ज॑या॒भी॒३मे ज॑यन्तु केतु॒मद् दु॑न्दुभिर्वा॑वदीतु । समश्व॑पर्णाः पतन्तु नो॒ नरो॒ऽस्माक॑मिन्द्र र॒थिनो॑ जयन्तु
पुढे चला—तिकडे विजय मिळवा; इथेलेही जिंकू देत. केतुमान (ध्वजयुक्त) दुन्दुभी जोरात निनादो. आमचे नर, अश्व-पंख असावेत तसे, एकत्र झडप घालोत; आणि हे इंद्रा, आमचे रथी योद्धे विजयी होवोत.
Because its sound is viewed as an active power: a living, breath-like force that can frighten enemies, remove ill-omens, and carry Indra’s martial energy into the human battlefield.
It is a metaphor of embodiment: the drum becomes Indra’s striking power in sonic form—its thunder functions like a divine blow that drives away durita and hostile forces.
Primarily for battle-protection and victory (rakṣoghna/paustika). It also has a ‘healing’ edge only in the sense of removing durita—misfortune and harmful influences—from the patron’s side.
