FAQs

This verse imparts Nighaṇṭu/lexicographic knowledge: a technical list of Sanskrit synonyms for “bee/honey-bee,” including poetic epithets like dvirepha and ṣaṭpada.

By preserving structured synonym lists (a mini-kośa), the Agni Purana functions as a reference work for correct terminology in poetry, commentary, and technical writing—one facet of its encyclopedic scope beyond ritual and mythology.

Its primary intent is not a ritual injunction but linguistic precision; traditionally, preserving correct śabda (word-usage) supports accurate transmission of śāstra and mantra, which is viewed as meritorious through safeguarding sacred knowledge.
