Skanda Purana — Mahesvara Khanda, Shloka 76

त्रिधा नौमित्तिकं प्रोक्तं सदा होमविवर्जितम् । इति प्रोक्ताः प्रकारास्ते त्रैविध्यमभिधीयते

tridhā naumittikaṃ proktaṃ sadā homavivarjitam | iti proktāḥ prakārāste traividhyamabhidhīyate

നൈമിത്തിക ദാനം ത്രിവിധമാണെന്ന് പ്രസ്താവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; അത് നിത്യമായി ഹോമം നിർബന്ധമില്ലാതെ, ഹോമവിവർജിതമായും ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നതായി പറയുന്നു. ഇങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞ രീതികളെയാണ് ത്രൈവിദ്ധ്യം എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നത്.
