It highlights the Shaiva Siddhanta mood of śaraṇāgati (taking refuge): when the limited self is overwhelmed by fear and remorse, sincere surrender and truthfully confessing the situation becomes the doorway to Shiva’s grace and protection.
The cry “Protect!” reflects approaching Saguna Shiva as the compassionate Lord who responds to devotees’ distress; in Linga-worship this same attitude is expressed through humble prayer, offering, and reliance on Shiva as Pati (the protecting Lord).
A practical takeaway is to adopt a refuge-prayer while japa—especially the Panchakshara “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—with a repentant, truthful mind, seeking protection from inner foes (fear, shame, agitation) as much as outer danger.
