Sthala Purana: The cow immerses thrice in the Narmadā and becomes white—an outward sign of inner purification—then returns; the marvel confirms the tīrtha’s sin-destroying potency tied to Śiva’s grace.

Significance: Triple immersion signifies thorough purification (mala-kṣaya) and readiness for Śiva-upāsanā; the ‘whitening’ evokes removal of pāśa (bondage) and restoration of sattva.

FAQs

The threefold immersion signifies deliberate purification of body and mind; the sudden “whiteness” points to inner cleansing and Shiva’s grace making the devotee radiant with sattva and purity.

In Kotirudra contexts, sacred bathing near a Jyotirlinga is a Saguna practice—approaching Shiva through a holy place and rite—yet it aims at inner transformation, preparing the devotee for deeper Shiva-bhakti and liberation.

Perform tirtha-snāna with focused remembrance of Shiva—ideally repeating the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya)—as a simple discipline of purification before Linga-darśana and worship.
