Lord Shiva (teaching in the Kailasha Samhita discourse tradition)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: The title Viśveśvara/Viśvanātha evokes Kāśī, where Śiva is worshipped as Lord of the universe; the Purāṇic sthala-tradition frames Kāśī as the city where liberation is granted by Śiva’s grace and where His lordship is uniquely manifest.
Significance: Darśana of Viśvanātha is sought for mokṣa-oriented merit, removal of fear of death, and stabilization of bhakti through the sense of Śiva as universal ruler.
Role: teaching
It presents a graded contemplation of Shiva’s lordship (Īśa → Viśveśvara → Parameśa → Sarveśvara) and links these to tirodhāna—His power that veils truth so bound souls mature, and then become fit for liberation through His later revelation and grace.
These names are Saguna epithets used in Linga-worship and mantra-japa to approach the One Pati (Shiva). The verse implies that even when the Supreme seems hidden (tīrodhāna), devotion to His manifest names and forms steadily leads the seeker toward clearer recognition of His supremacy.
Name-japa and dhyāna on Shiva through these titles—especially with the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—is suggested as a practical way to pierce veiling (tīrodhāna) and cultivate steady recognition of Shiva as Sarveśvara.
