Inside Sukta 15

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A formal summons: the Fathers of all stations (lower, higher, middle) are called to rise and assist the living in their invocations.

  2. Development

The hymn identifies the Pitṛs as Soma-enjoyers and ṛta-knowers, worthy recipients of offerings; it expands the rite into a communion across generations, with Yama as associated authority.

  3. Climax

The request that Yama, together with the ancient Fathers, joyfully partake of the offerings “according to each true need,” aligning desire with right order.

  4. Where it settles

A comprehensive closing prayer: whether fire-purified or not, all Fathers who rejoice by svadhā are asked to aid the soul’s onward-leading life-path and to shape embodiment according to its own lawful becoming.

The deity: Pitṛs

  • In the VedaThe Pitṛs are the departed forefathers who have “gone with the life-breath,” are harm-less and ṛta-knowers, and who enjoy Soma and svadhā in their own realm. They are invited to rise, sit on the ritual grass, and partake of offerings, often in Yama’s company.
  • Cosmic functionThey form the ancestral order that bridges generations, maintaining continuity between the living community and the post-mortem world; they also model the righteous path (ṛta) and transmit blessing, protection, and fertility/fortune to descendants.
  • Inner significanceRepresents memory, gratitude, lineage, and the inner ‘root’ of identity; psychologically, the Pitṛs signify inherited wisdom and ethical continuity, and spiritually they point to the ordered transition of life-breath and embodiment beyond death.

The seer

  • Anukramaṇī attribution uncertain (Pitṛ-yajña / Yama–Pitṛ cycle; often connected with Vasiṣṭha tradition)Likely Vasiṣṭha-related (Vasiṣṭha-gotra) in later tradition; exact rishi varies by Anukramaṇī recension · Associated with the Pitṛ (ancestor) liturgy in Mandala 10, articulating a structured invocation of the departed across cosmic levels and integrating Soma, ṛta, and Yama into funerary/ancestor-rite theology.

The rite, step by step

  • Purify and light the ritual fire (Agni) as the carrier of offerings and the boundary-marker between worlds.
  • Prepare a Pitṛ-seat (barhis/kuśa) and ritually invite the Fathers to ‘rise’ and arrive—lower, middle, and higher.
  • Offer oblations with svadhā-formulae, requesting the Pitṛs to hear the calls and grant help.
  • Invoke the earlier Fathers who followed Soma; acknowledge Yama’s presence as the orderly governor of the departed.
  • Conclude by requesting well-being for the living: protection, right ordering of life-breath (asu), and proper formation/continuity of embodied life according to ṛta.

Offerings

  • Piṇḍa/food portions (in later continuity)
  • Ghee and cooked offering (caru)
  • Soma/pressing symbolism or Soma-related libation where applicable

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a hymn inviting the ancestors (Pitṛs) to come, receive offerings, and protect the living. It also connects the ancestor-world with Soma, ṛta (cosmic order), and Yama.

It poetically organizes the departed into levels or groups, implying a complete ancestral host across realms. The point is to invite all ancestors—near and far, recent and ancient—without omission.

It refers to those who were cremated (“burned by fire”) and those who were not. The verse widens the prayer so that all departed ancestors, regardless of funerary circumstance, are included in the rite and blessing.
