Sugriva’s Reassurance and Lakshmana’s Counsel
yadi kiñcid atikrāntaṃ viśvāsāt praṇayena vā | preṣyasya kṣamitavyaṃ me na kaścin nāparādhyati ||
Lakshmana who was happy to hear great Sugriva replied affectionately:
Dharma is the ethic of humility and forgiveness: admitting error, seeking pardon, and recognizing human fallibility while maintaining truthful accountability.
Sugrīva apologizes for a possible lapse—having exceeded a time limit or obligation—explaining it arose from trust/affection, and asks Lakṣmaṇa to forgive him.
Sugrīva’s contrition and truthfulness (satya): he does not deny fault but requests pardon in a disciplined, self-aware manner.
