Unspecified (narrative catalogue verse; speaker not identifiable from the single verse alone)

Concept: The world’s diversity is not random but part of kalpa-krama—an ordered unfolding within cosmic time.

Application: See life’s circumstances as situated within a larger order; respond with steadiness and dharmic action rather than resentment toward one’s ‘place’ in the world.

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A cosmic wheel of time (kāla-cakra) turns above a landscape mosaic: Deccan plateaus for Kuṃtala, fertile Yamunā-adjacent plains for Śūrasena, and smaller named tracts as patterned tiles. Each region is shown as a ‘cause/constituent’ bead on a garland of kalpa, implying the universe as an ordered rosary.","primary_figures":["personified Kāla (subtle, shadowed)","Viṣṇu emblem (cakra)","regional figures of Kuṃtala and Śūrasena"],"setting":"Mythic cosmogram combining a time-wheel and a patchwork of terrains.","lighting_mood":"divine radiance","color_palette":["midnight indigo","burnished gold","yamuna teal","terracotta","pearl white"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: central gold-leaf kāla-cakra with embossed spokes, surrounding medallions for Kuṃtala (Deccan fort and plateau), Śūrasena (Yamunā ghats and temple silhouettes), and other tracts as jeweled tiles; Viṣṇu’s cakra motif crowning the composition; rich reds/greens, gem-like ornamentation, ornate border filigree.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: elegant circular composition with a translucent time-wheel in the sky, below it gentle vignettes—Mathurā-like ghats for Śūrasena, rocky Deccan hills for Kuṃtala—fine brushwork, cool shadows, lyrical naturalism, small calligraphy labels on ribbons.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlined wheel-of-time above stylized landscape registers; flat pigment fields, strong reds/yellows/greens; symbolic cakra at the center; region names integrated into decorative bands; temple-wall symmetry and rhythmic patterning.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: a large central cakra-lotus hybrid, petals containing region scenes; Śūrasena petal includes cows, peacocks, and Yamunā motifs hinting at Vraja; intricate floral borders, deep blue ground with gold highlights and white linework."}

FAQs

It functions as a catalogue line, listing groups/regions (janapadas) and presenting them as elements connected with the cosmic arrangement described in the chapter.

In Purāṇic usage, such terms typically denote janapadas—peoples and their territories—rather than single individuals.

It literally means “causes/constituents of a kalpa,” suggesting these listed groups are being placed within a larger cosmological or world-ordering framework used by Purāṇas.
