The Arkāṅga Saptamī (Bhāskara Saptamī) Vow: Origin of Sūrya, Pacification of Rays, and Māgha Saptamī Observance

इदमेव परं गुह्यं भाषितं शंभुना पुरा । श्रवणात्सततं तस्य व्रतस्य परिपालनात् । श्रावयेद्वापि लोकस्य फलं तुल्यं प्रकीर्तितं

idameva paraṃ guhyaṃ bhāṣitaṃ śaṃbhunā purā | śravaṇātsatataṃ tasya vratasya paripālanāt | śrāvayedvāpi lokasya phalaṃ tulyaṃ prakīrtitaṃ

Concept: Sacred knowledge multiplies when heard, practiced, and shared; dissemination itself is a meritorious act equal to personal observance.

Application: Study and practice a discipline, then teach it responsibly—read aloud to family/community, sponsor recitations, or share accurate guidance without distortion.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Śiva (Śambhu) is envisioned as the original revealer, seated in tranquil majesty, while sages and householders listen in concentric circles. In the foreground, a reciter reads from a palm-leaf manuscript, and the sound itself is depicted as luminous waves—suggesting that merely hearing and sharing the vow’s teaching grants equal fruit.","primary_figures":["Śambhu (Śiva) as original proclaimer","reciting sage","listeners (brāhmaṇas, householders)"],"setting":"forest āśrama with a small shrine and a teaching pavilion; palm-leaf manuscripts and a low seat for discourse","lighting_mood":"forest dappled","color_palette":["ash grey","rudraksha brown","sandalwood beige","emerald green","soft gold"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Śiva as the primordial teacher with gold-leaf aura, seated on a tiger-skin; below, a sage recites from palm-leaf manuscripts to an attentive assembly; ornate gold borders and rich reds/greens; luminous sound-waves rendered as gold filigree curling toward listeners, symbolizing equal merit through hearing and sharing.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate satsang in a forest clearing; delicate manuscript details, refined faces, gentle hand gestures of teaching; cool greens and soft browns; Śiva subtly present as a visionary figure in the background, indicating ‘spoken by Śambhu long ago’.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: Śiva as guru with bold outlines and iconic eyes; a semicircle of listeners; stylized palm leaves and a lamp; dominant reds/yellows/greens; rhythmic border patterns suggesting continuous śravaṇa.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central discourse scene framed by lotus and vine borders; stylized sound motifs as repeating floral spirals; deep blue ground with gold highlights; peacocks at corners as symbols of attentive listening; emphasis on communal hearing as sacred act."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"narrative","suggested_raga":"Durga","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["murmured assembly responses","rustling palm leaves","temple bells at intervals","forest birds","steady drone"]}

FAQs

It praises continual listening (śravaṇa), faithful observance of the associated vow (vrata), and even enabling others to hear the teaching—each said to yield an equal spiritual fruit (phala).

The verse frames it as a confidential, high-value instruction traditionally reserved for sincere seekers—emphasizing its potency and the reverence with which it should be received and transmitted.

It encourages generosity in spiritual knowledge: sharing beneficial teachings for the welfare of people is treated as morally and spiritually comparable to personal practice.
