The Glory of the Devoted Wife (Pativratā) and the Māṇḍavya Curse: Sunrise Halted and Restored

सा चोवाच विधिं तत्र देवानामग्रतः सती । पतिं त्यक्त्वा च मे सत्यं शिवं मे नानुरोचते

sā covāca vidhiṃ tatra devānāmagrataḥ satī | patiṃ tyaktvā ca me satyaṃ śivaṃ me nānurocate

Satī

Concept: Satī asserts uncompromising loyalty: even hypothetically abandoning her husband, Śiva would not be ‘acceptable’—a radical statement of exclusive commitment and personal dharma.

Application: Clarify your non-negotiables in relationships and ethics; let commitments be grounded in truth (satya) rather than social pressure.

Primary Rasa: vira

Secondary Rasa: karuna

Type: celestial_realm

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"In the midst of a celestial assembly, Satī stands upright, eyes steady, speaking truth before Brahmā and the gathered devas. FAQs

Satī is speaking, addressing Vidhi (Brahmā), and the statement is made in the presence of the assembled gods (Devas).

The verse highlights Satī’s intense personal stance regarding Śiva—framed as a truth-claim (“satyam”)—and places it within a public, divine assembly, emphasizing how personal devotion/aversion can become a matter of cosmic discourse.

Although the Padma Purana is strongly Vaishnava in many sections (especially Uttara-khaṇḍa), the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa often preserves multi-sectarian narratives; here, Śaiva figures (Satī and Śiva) appear within a creation-era dialogue involving Brahmā and the Devas.
