देव्युवाच । तपसा दुष्करेणाप्तः पतिर्वै शंकरो मया । समां श्यामलवर्णेति बहुशः प्रोक्तवान्रहः

devyuvāca | tapasā duṣkareṇāptaḥ patirvai śaṃkaro mayā | samāṃ śyāmalavarṇeti bahuśaḥ proktavānrahaḥ

ദേവി പറഞ്ഞു—ദുഷ്കരമായ തപസ്സിലൂടെ ഞാൻ ശങ്കരനെ ഭർത്താവായി നേടി. അദ്ദേഹം പലവട്ടം ഏകാന്തത്തിൽ എന്നോട്—‘പ്രിയേ, നീ ശ്യാമവർണ്ണയാണു’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു।
