पुरा परंपरां वक्ति पुराणं तेन वै स्मृतम् । निरुक्तिमस्य यो वेद सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते

purā paraṃparāṃ vakti purāṇaṃ tena vai smṛtam | niruktimasya yo veda sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

പുരാതനപരമ്പരയെ അനുക്രമമായി പറയുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് അത് ‘പുരാണം’ എന്നു സ്മരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇതിന്റെ നിരുക്തി (അർത്ഥ-വ്യുത്പത്തി) യഥാർത്ഥമായി അറിയുന്നവൻ സർവ്വപാപങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നു വിമുക്തനാകുന്നു.
