Adhyaya 8 — Harishchandra’s Trial: Truth, the Sale of Family, and Bondage to a Chandala
स वारिणा समभ्युक्ष्य राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ।
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ राजेन्द्र तां ददस्वेष्टदक्षिणाम् ॥
sa vāriṇā samabhyukṣya rājānam idam abravīt | uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha rājendra tāṃ dadasveṣṭa-dakṣiṇām ||
അവൻ വെള്ളം തളിച്ച് രാജാവിനെ ബോധത്തിലാക്കി പറഞ്ഞു—“എഴുന്നേൽക്കുക, എഴുന്നേൽക്കുക, രാജേന്ദ്രാ; ഇവൾക്ക് അഭിലഷിതമായ ദക്ഷിണ നൽകുക.”

The verse reinforces the dharmic principle that rites are completed not merely by performance but by proper reciprocation—dakṣiṇā and honor to the worthy. For a king, generosity and prompt fulfillment of pledged gifts are marks of righteous rule and social order.
This verse is not directly sarga (creation), pratisarga (re-creation), vaṃśa (genealogy), manvantara, or vaṃśānucarita (dynastic deeds). It aligns more with ancillary purāṇic material on ācāra/dharma (norms of conduct) embedded within narrative.
The sprinkling with water (abhiṣeka-like benediction) symbolizes ritual purification and authorization to act; the command to “rise” indicates awakening into dharmic responsibility. Dakṣiṇā functions as the outward seal of inner resolve—making intention concrete through sanctioned giving.
