Educational Q&A

The verse links outer pilgrimage (bathing at a tīrtha) with inner discipline (prāṇāyāma). True purification is not merely ritual; yogic practice and mental purity are emphasized as leading to the ‘supreme goal’ (paramagati).

In the Vana Parva’s pilgrimage catalogue, the speaker Ghūlastya describes a specific sacred place—Śvāvillomāpanayana—praising its power to grant great joy and purification to learned, pilgrimage-minded Brahmins who bathe there and practice breath-discipline.
