Draupadī on Action, Fate, and Human Effort
evaṃ eva manuṣyendra dharma tyaktvā alpakaṃ naraḥ | bṛhantaṃ dharmam āpnoti sa buddha iti niścitam ||
The verse teaches ethical discernment: when duties conflict, relinquishing a minor obligation in order to fulfill a greater, more comprehensive dharma is a mark of true wisdom.
Vaiśampāyana addresses a king and draws a general moral conclusion from a preceding example: choosing the higher dharma over a lesser one is praised and defined as the conduct of a wise person.
