The Arrival of Maitreya and the Admonition to Duryodhana
daṇḍapāṇir iva kruddhaḥ samare pratyadhāvat | tad vṛkṣayuddham abhavan mahīruhavināśanam ||
The verse uses the image of a punitive staff-bearer and the destruction of great trees to underline how uncontrolled anger in conflict spreads harm beyond the intended opponent, damaging the wider world and order (dharma) that punishment is meant to protect.
A combatant, furious, charges into battle; the fighting escalates into a 'tree-battle' where trees are used and destroyed, resulting in the ruin of large trees and the surrounding woodland.
