Sanatsujāta–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Saṃvāda: Pramāda as Mṛtyu

Chapter 42

सनत्युजात उवाच यतो न वेदा मनसा सहैन- मनुप्रविशन्ति ततो5थमौनम्‌ । यत्रोत्थितो वेदशब्दस्तथायं स तन्मयत्वेन विभाति राजन,सनत्सुजातने कहा--राजन्‌! जहाँ मनके सहित वाणीरूप वेद नहीं पहुँच पाते, उस परमात्माका ही नाम मौन है; इसलिये वही मौनस्वरूप है। वैदिक तथा लौकिक शब्दोंका जहाँसे प्रादुर्भाव हुआ है, वे परमेश्वर तन्‍्मयतापूर्वक ध्यान करनेसे प्रकाशमें आते हैं

sanatsujāta uvāca | yato na vedā manasā saha enam anupraviśanti tato 'tha maunam | yatrothito vedāśabdas tathāyaṁ sa tanmayatvena vibhāti rājan ||

സനത്സുജാതൻ പറഞ്ഞു—രാജാവേ! മനസ്സോടുകൂടിയ വേദവാണിക്കും അവനെ പ്രവേശിച്ച് ഗ്രഹിക്കാനാകാത്ത അവസ്ഥയെയാണ് ‘മൗനം’ എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നത്. വേദശബ്ദം ഉദ്ഭവിക്കുന്ന ആ പരമേശ്വരൻ തന്നെ, തന്മയധ്യാനത്തിൽ ലീനനായവന് പ്രകാശിതനാകുന്നു.

True ‘silence’ is not merely the absence of speech; it is the transcendence of mind-and-word where the Supreme cannot be grasped by conceptual thought or verbal formulation. Yet that same Supreme is realized when one meditates with complete absorption (tanmayatva), allowing Him to ‘shine forth’ as direct experience.
