यस्मिन् यथा वर्तते यो मनुष्य- स्तस्मिंस्तथा वर्तितव्यं स धर्म: | मायाचारो मायया वर्तितव्य: साध्वाचार: साधुना प्रत्युपेय:
yasmin yathā vartate yo manuṣyas tasmiṁs tathā vartitavyaṁ sa dharmaḥ | māyācāro māyayā vartitavyaḥ sādhvācāraḥ sādhunā pratyupeyaḥ ||
ഒരു മനുഷ്യൻ എങ്ങനെ പെരുമാറുന്നുവോ, അവനോടും അതുപോലെ പെരുമാറേണ്ടതുതന്നെ നീതിധർമ്മം. കപടാചാരിയോട് കപടത്താൽ (ജാഗ്രതയോടെ, തന്ത്രപൂർവ്വം) പെരുമാറണം; സദാചാരിയോട് സദ്ഭാവത്തോടെ തന്നെ മറുപടി നൽകണം.
विदुर उवाच
Dharma here is framed as appropriate reciprocity: respond to people according to their conduct—guarded strategy against deceit, and sincere goodness toward the virtuous.
