Bhishma said: That king, having once again investigated and come to know the true facts, realized that Drupada’s child—Shikhaṇḍinī, the offspring of the Pāñcālas—was indeed a girl. Enraged by this discovery and feeling deceived despite the earlier soothing messages sent through sweet-speaking envoys, he hastened to set out, intent on attacking Drupada. The episode highlights how wounded honor and suspicion, when not restrained by discernment and dharma, can quickly harden into violent resolve.

Educational Q&A

The passage underscores that when truth is uncovered after attempted diplomatic reassurance, unchecked anger and injured pride can override restraint; dharma calls for discernment and measured response rather than immediate violent retaliation.

Hiraṇyavarman re-investigates and confirms that Drupada’s child Shikhaṇḍinī is a girl; feeling deceived despite earlier conciliatory messages, he becomes furious and hastily prepares to attack Drupada.
