न च ते<न्या गतिन्याय्या भवेद्‌ भद्रे यथा पिता । पतिर्वापि गतिरनार्या: पिता वा वरवर्णिनि,भद्रे! तुम्हारे लिये पिताका आश्रय लेना जैसा न्यायसंगत है, वैसा दूसरा कोई सहारा नहीं है। वरवर्णिनि! नारीके लिये पति अथवा पिता ही गति (आश्रय) है

na ca te ’nyā gatir nyāyyā bhaved bhadre yathā pitā | patir vāpi gatir anāryāḥ pitā vā varavarṇini ||

ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ഭദ്രേ! പിതാവിന്റെ ആശ്രയം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ ന്യായവും യുക്തിയും ഉള്ള മറ്റൊരു അഭയം നിനക്കില്ല. വരവർണിനീ! സ്ത്രീയുടെ ഗതി (ആശ്രയം) ഭർത്താവാണ്; അവൻ ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ പിതാവാണ്.
