Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 13: Śacī’s Delay, Deva-Counsel, and Indra’s Purification
अकम्पन्नहुषं स्थानाद् दृष्टवा बलनिषूदन: । तेजोघ्नं सर्वभूतानां वरदानाच्च दुःसहम्,परंतु बल नामक दानवका नाश करनेवाले इन्द्र जब अपना स्थान ग्रहण करनेके लिये स्वर्गलोकमें आये, तब उन्होंने देखा--नहुष देवताओंके वरदानसे अपनी दृष्टिमात्रसे समस्त प्राणियोंके तेजको नष्ट करनेमें समर्थ और दुःसह हो गया है। यह देखकर वे काँप उठे
akampan nahuṣaṁ sthānād dṛṣṭvā balanīṣūdanaḥ | tejoghnam sarvabhūtānāṁ varadānāc ca duḥsaham ||
ബലനാമ ദാനവനെ വധിച്ച ഇന്ദ്രൻ തന്റെ സിംഹാസനം വീണ്ടും ഏറ്റെടുക്കാൻ സ്വർഗത്തിലേക്ക് വന്നപ്പോൾ, ദേവന്മാരുടെ വരദാനത്താൽ നഹുഷൻ അസഹ്യനായി, വെറും ദൃഷ്ടിമാത്രംകൊണ്ട് സകല ജീവികളുടെയും തേജസ്സിനെ നശിപ്പിക്കാൻ ശേഷിയുള്ളവനായി മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടു. അത് കണ്ട ഇന്ദ്രൻ ഭയത്തോടെ വിറച്ചു.
