स्यातां यस्याहुकाक्रूरी कि नु दुःखतरं ततः । यस्य चापि न तौ स्यातां कि नु दुःखतरं ततः
syātāṁ yasyāhukākrūrī ki nu duḥkhataraṁ tataḥ | yasya cāpi na tau syātāṁ ki nu duḥkhataraṁ tataḥ ||
പരസ്പരം കലഹിക്കുന്ന ആഹുകനും അക്രൂരനും ഒരാളുടെ സ്വന്തം ബന്ധുക്കളായി ഇരുവരും ഉണ്ടായാൽ, അതിലേറെ ദുഃഖം എന്തുണ്ട്? അതുപോലെ അവർ ഇരുവരും അവന്റെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളല്ലെങ്കിൽ പോലും, അതിലേറെ ദുഃഖം എന്തുണ്ട്—അത്തരം മിത്രങ്ങളുടെയും പിന്തുണയുടെയും അഭാവം തന്നെയല്ലോ മഹാനഷ്ടം.
