हीना: सत्त्वेन शुद्धेन ततो वैकारिका: स्मृता: । नृपश्रेष्ठ॒ देवता और ऋषि कामनायुक्त सत्त्वगुणमें स्थित होते हैं। उनमें भी शुद्ध सत्त्गगुणकी कमी होती है, इसलिये वे वैकारिक माने जाते हैं || ७८ $ ।। जनमेजय उवाच कथं वैकारिको गच्छेत्‌ पुरुष: पुरुषोत्तमम्‌

hīnāḥ sattvena śuddhena tato vaikārikāḥ smṛtāḥ | janamejaya uvāca kathaṃ vaikāriko gacchet puruṣaḥ puruṣottamam |

അവർ ശുദ്ധസത്ത്വത്തിൽ കുറവുള്ളവരാകയാൽ ‘വൈകാരികർ’ എന്നു സ്മരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ ജനമേജയൻ ചോദിച്ചു—ഹേ പുരുഷോത്തമാ! വൈകാരിക സ്വഭാവമുള്ള പുരുഷൻ പുരുഷോത്തമനെ എങ്ങനെ പ്രാപിക്കും?
