अव्यक्त–पुरुष–विवेकः (Discrimination of Avyakta/Prakṛti and Puruṣa) — Yājñavalkya’s Anvīkṣikī to Viśvāvasu

सर्गप्रलय एतावानू प्रकृतेर्नुपसत्तम । एकत्वं प्रलये चास्य बहुत्वं च यदासृजत्‌,नृपश्रेष्ठ) इतना ही प्रकृतिके सर्ग और प्रलयका विषय है। प्रलयकालमें इसका एकत्व है और जब रचना होती है, तब इसके बहुत भेद हो जाते हैं। राजेन्द्र! ज्ञाननिपुण पुरुषोंको इसी प्रकार प्रकृतिका एकत्व और नानात्व जानना चाहिये। अव्यक्त प्रकृति ही अधिष्ठाता पुरुषको सृष्टिकालमें नानात्वकी ओर ले जाती है। यही पुरुषके एकत्वका निदर्शन है

sarga-pralaya etāvān u prakṛter nṛpasattama | ekatvaṁ pralaye cāsya bahutvaṁ ca yadāsṛjat ||

വസിഷ്ഠൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ഹേ നൃപശ്രേഷ്ഠാ! പ്രകൃതിയുടെ സൃഷ്ടിയും പ്രളയവും സംബന്ധിച്ച വിവരണം ഇത്രയേ ഉള്ളൂ. പ്രളയകാലത്ത് അത് ഏകത്വമായിരിക്കും; സൃഷ്ടിക്കുമ്പോൾ അത് ബഹുത്വമായി വിരിയുന്നു. രാജേന്ദ്രാ! ജ്ഞാനനിപുണർ പ്രകൃതിയുടെ ഏകത്വവും നാനാത്വവും ഇങ്ങനെ തന്നെയറിയണം.

Educational Q&A

Nature (prakṛti) is undivided in dissolution (pralaya) but appears as diverse in creation (sarga). The wise should understand this unity-and-diversity framework, and see that the unmanifest prakṛti generates multiplicity while the presiding Self/Person (puruṣa) remains fundamentally one.

Vasiṣṭha is instructing a king in philosophical cosmology: how the world-process alternates between dissolution and creation, and how prakṛti’s unmanifest state becomes manifold, relating this to the oneness of the puruṣa behind experience.
