चिरेण मित्र बध्नीयाच्चिरेण च कृतं त्यजेत् । चिरेण हि कृतं मित्र चिरं धारणमर्हति
cireṇa mitra badhnīyāc cireṇa ca kṛtaṃ tyajet | cireṇa hi kṛtaṃ mitra ciraṃ dhāraṇam arhati ||
ദീർഘകാലം പരിശോധിച്ചശേഷമേ സൗഹൃദം ബന്ധിക്കാവൂ; ഉറപ്പിച്ച വഴിയും ദീർഘചിന്തയ്ക്കുശേഷമേ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കാവൂ. കാരണം കാലംകൊണ്ട് സ്ഥാപിതമായത്, ഹേ സുഹൃത്തേ, ദീർഘകാലം നിലനിർത്താൻ അർഹമാണ്.
भीष्म उवाच
Bhīṣma teaches deliberation and stability: bonds like friendship should be formed only after long testing, and long-established commitments should not be discarded hastily; what matures over time deserves sustained loyalty.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma and right conduct, Bhīṣma continues advising Yudhiṣṭhira, offering practical ethical counsel about how to enter relationships and how cautiously to renounce established undertakings.
