Adhyāya 178 — The courses of prāṇa-vāyu and the regulation of the bodily fire
viharīṣyāmy anāsaktaḥ sukhī lokān nirāmayaḥ | yayā māṃ tvaṃ punar naivaṃ duḥkheṣu praṇidhāsyasi ||
The verse emphasizes anāsakti (non-attachment) as a safeguard against recurring duḥkha (suffering): by living unattached and inwardly free, one is no longer driven back into the same patterns of pain.
Bhishma, speaking in the Shanti Parva’s instruction-setting, declares his resolve to move through existence without attachment and without affliction, indicating a spiritual stance that prevents being thrown again into suffering.
