Educational Q&A

Even amid war, ethical self-review and acknowledgement of one’s faults should lead to benevolence: the ideal ruler/warrior turns from hostility to the protection and welfare of others, especially after recognizing wrongdoing.

In Vaiśaṃpāyana’s narration, an appeal is voiced to a Bharata hero addressed as ‘bharatarṣabha’ to adopt a welfare-minded attitude toward the Pāṇḍavas and to protect them, explicitly grounding the request in reflection on prior events and personal offenses.
