Duryodhana-vadha-pratikriyā: Harṣa, Nindā, and Kṛṣṇa’s Nīti-vyākhyā (Śalya-parva 60)

वायुदेव उवाच धर्मराज किमर्थ त्वमधर्ममनुमन्यसे । हतबन्धोर्यदेतस्य पतितस्यथ विचेतस:,श्रीकृष्णने पूछा--धर्मराज! आप चुप होकर अधर्मका अनुमोदन क्‍यों कर रहे हैं? नरेश्वर दुर्योधनके भाई और सहायक मारे जा चुके हैं। यह पृथ्वीपर गिरकर अचेत हो रहा है। ऐसी दशामें भीमसेन इसके मस्तकको पैरसे कुचल रहे हैं। आप धर्मज्ञ होकर समीपसे ही यह सब कैसे देख रहे हैं

Vāyudeva uvāca: Dharmarāja kimartha tvaṁ adharmam anumanyase | hatabandhor yad etasya patitasya atha vicetasaḥ ||

വായുദേവൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ധർമ്മരാജാ! നീ എന്തുകൊണ്ട് മൗനമായി അധർമ്മത്തെ അംഗീകരിക്കുന്നു? ഇതിന്റെ ബന്ധുക്കളും സഹായികളും കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു; ഇത് ഭൂമിയിൽ വീണു ബോധരഹിതമായി കിടക്കുന്നു.

Educational Q&A

Even in war, victory does not justify cruelty toward a fallen and senseless opponent. A dharma-knower must not become a silent accomplice to adharma; moral responsibility includes restraining excess and refusing to endorse wrongdoing by inaction.

After Duryodhana has been brought down and lies helpless, Bhīma, driven by wrath and the memory of past insults, is said to press or crush his head with his foot. Vāyudeva rebukes Yudhiṣṭhira for permitting this breach of righteous conduct and questions how he can watch it silently.
