Resolve for the Mace Duel
duryodhana uvāca | asyāvahāsasya phalaṃ pratibhokṣyatha pāṇḍavāḥ | gamiṣyatha hatāḥ sadyaḥ sapañcālā yamakṣayam ||
The verse highlights the idea of moral consequence (phala) tied to actions and attitudes—here, mockery and humiliation are framed as provoking retaliation. Ethically, it also illustrates how pride and anger in war rhetoric escalate violence and harden resolve.
In the Shalya Parva battle context, Duryodhana addresses the Pāṇḍavas (and their Pañcāla allies), declaring that they will immediately suffer the ‘fruit’ of their ridicule and be slain, going to Yama’s realm—an aggressive battlefield taunt and threat.
