Educational Q&A

The line underscores the precariousness of life in war and frames survival as a matter of destiny or providential fortune (diṣṭi). It implicitly highlights the ethical weight of warfare: the battlefield is characterized as vīrakṣaya, a ‘slaughter of heroes,’ reminding the listener of the human cost even when the fallen are valorous.

Sañjaya addresses someone who has returned to the city from the battlefield. He remarks that it is fortunate the person has come back alive from the ongoing conflict, which is described as a scene of massive heroic casualties.
