Nārada’s Examination of Royal Ethics

कच्चिन्न लोभान्मोहाद्‌ वा मानादू्‌ वापि विशाम्पते । अर्थिप्रित्यर्थिन: प्राप्तानू न पश्यसि कथंचन,नरेश्वर! कहीं ऐसा तो नहीं होता कि तुम अपने यहाँ आये हुए अर्थी (याचक) और प्रत्यर्थी (राजाकी ओरसे मिली हुई वृत्ति बंद हो जानेसे दुःखी हो पुनः उसीको पानेके लिये प्रार्थी)-की ओर लोभ, मोह अथवा अभिमानवश किसी प्रकार आँख उठाकर देखतेतक नहीं?

നാരദൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ഹേ ജനാധിപനായ നരേശ്വരാ! ലോഭം, മോഹം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അഹങ്കാരം മൂലം നിന്റെ അടുക്കൽ വന്ന അർഥി (യാചകൻ)യും, മുമ്പ് രാജാവിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭിച്ച ഉപജീവനം നിലച്ചതിനാൽ വീണ്ടും അപേക്ഷിക്കുന്ന പ്രത്യർഥിയും—ഇവരെ നീ ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും നോക്കാതെയോ അവഗണിച്ചോ പോകുന്നുണ്ടോ?

Educational Q&A

A king must not let greed, delusion, or pride block access to justice and support. Ethical governance includes personally acknowledging and hearing petitioners—especially the vulnerable who depend on royal patronage—rather than neglecting them.

Nārada continues a traditional ‘kaccit’ series of welfare-questions to a ruler, probing whether the king is fulfilling royal duties. Here he asks whether the king ever ignores those who come seeking help or those who return seeking restoration of previously granted support.
